Steve Wozniak Likes Android Phones!

Cofounder of Apple, Steve Wozniak, recently did an interview with The Daily Beast.  In it, he spoke about iPhones in comparison to android phones.  Surprisingly, he admitted that he believes android phones are ahead of iPhones in some ways.  “My primary phone is the iPhone,” Mr. Wozniak said. “I love the beauty of it. But I wish it did all the things my Android does, I really do.”  Obviously, he does use both an iPhone and an android one.  One of his complaints about the iPhone relates to battery usage with the new iOS5.  Like many others who upgraded to the new os,  he experienced very short battery life.  Apple has provided updates to solve the problem, but some are still having issues.

Another area of concern to Mr. Wozniak is the new Siri service.  Apparently he feels Siri was much better as a stand-alone app, than it is now as an integrated part of iOS5.  He said, “I used to ask Siri, ‘What are the five biggest lakes in California?’ and it would come back with the answer. Now it just misses. It gives me real estate listings. I used to ask, ‘What are the prime numbers greater than 87?’ and it would answer. Now instead of getting prime numbers, I get listings for prime rib, or prime real estate.”  Another problem is that Siri now requires an internet connection for all voice commands.  “With the iPhone 4 I could press a button and call my wife,” Mr. Wozniak said. “Now on the 4S I can only do that when Siri can connect over the Internet. But many times it can’t connect. I’ve never had Android come back and say, ‘I can’t connect over the Internet.’”  He added, “I have a lower success rate with Siri than I do with the voice built into the Android, and that bothers me,” Woz says. “I’ll be saying, over and over again in my car, ‘Call the Lark Creek Steak House,’ and I can’t get it done. Then I pick up my Android, say the same thing, and it’s done. Plus I get navigation. Android is way ahead on that.”

While Mr. Wozniak does appreciate certain features of android, he does say that iPhones are the best choice for users already comfortable with iOS, or those who want a simpler, easy to use interface.  While android has been the more complicated operating system, the hope is Ice Cream Sandwich will bring uniformity to the android ecosystem.  If nothing else, Steve Wozniak should be applauded for his honesty, as the Apple faithful will certainly not be pleased with his comments.  But he did say both OS’s have merits, and that gives you a choice.  Android just gives you more choices.
