ASUS To Release Seven Inch Tablet?

Notebook Italia has published a leaked rendering of what they say is going to be a new seven-inch tablet from ASUS. Back in January 2011, at CES, ASUS revealed plans for the Eee Pad MeMo.  That device would have a seven inch screen, 1280×800 resolution, and a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.  Available with 3G and Wifi, it is not really clear if this is the device pictured in the rendering.

Another possibility is that this device is the Padphone, which uses a smartphone to provide the processing for a tablet when inserted into the rear of the unit.  The Padphone is expected to be a ten-inch device, while there appears to be some type of docking ports visible on the bottom of the image, which would suggest this tablet is designed with a portrait orientation in mind.  So it is not likely a larger tablet.  One intriguing possibility is that the new tablet has a glasses-free 3D display.  This would be similar to the Nintendo 3DS, and it may even turn out to be a gaming-oriented device.  ASUS has stuck with the larger ten inch screen size so far, but with the popularity of the Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Nobles’ Nook Tablet, debuting a low priced, smaller screen-sized device would make a lot of sense right now.  With CES 2012 right around the corner, we should know the answer to what exactly this is fairly soon.
