The first tablet available with android’s latest operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich, comes from a China-based manufacturer, MIPS Technologies. The Novo 7 runs on a 1GHZ  Ingenic JZ4770 processor, with a seven-inch capacitive screen.  And before you think “it’s just a a cheap knockoff”, this device has Google CTS certification.  Andy Rubin, Google’s senior VP of Mobile, says this about the tablet- “I’m thrilled to see the entrance of MIPS-Based Android 4.0 tablets into the market,” Rubin said in a statement. “Low-cost, high-performance tablets are a big win for mobile consumers and a strong illustration of how Android’s openness drives innovation and competition for the benefit of consumers around the world.”  It does come with the android market, and Google apps installed. The tablet has features you would expect to see only on more expensive units.  There are both front and rear facing cameras. as well as USB, HDMI, and micro-sd ports.  1080p video decoding is supported, and it’s graphics chips runs@444MHZ.  Not a bad tablet for under $100.  Right now, it is sold out online, but you can check out to see if it’s back in stock at http://www.ainovo.com/ . This won’t be available in in retailers outside China for a few months, but if it turns out to be even half-way decent, this tablet could sell quite well.  The company has also announced plans to make larger-screen devices in the near future.  The use of MIPS processors is interesting, because the Chinese are trying to develop their own chips, in order to reduce reliance on Western technologies as well as break into the mobile market.
