I ordered a VL Prestige 10 for my wife for christmas. I would like to get it mean and lean for optimal performance before I give it to her. What are your suggestions for basic improvements to the out of the box model to improve battery life and performance?
She will use it for:
1) Facebook...lots of it.
2) Web browsing
3) Game Apps (young kids)
6) MP3 and/or music streaming
...and that's about it.
I see info about roms and such, but I don't really know what any of that stuff is. We both have android based phones but I haven't rooted any device or done any major changes.
Thanks for any suggestions.
PS. I'm looking for a good case, hopefully a silicone one or one that doesn't add much bulk. Tips?
Most of the intended uses have specialized apps that you will want to get. If it is not already on android 4.0.4, you might want to upgrade (it had better battery life).
For netflix, you don't want to update past version 1.8.1, since that is the last version that worked properly.

Are there any apps I should consider to help save battery life or for basic maintenance to keep the tablet running smoothly? Also, can you help me understand what a rom is and why I might want to install one on the tablet. Thanks for your help.
A ROM is what is flashed to the device to install the OS. They can be sent to you OTA(over the air) or you can get them from a site and install it on your own. Never flash a ROM that is not intended for your device. There are some devices that can flash ROMs meant for several devices but there aren't many of them. Just double check that it is OK for your device as it can cause your device to be bricked and unusable.
Custom ROMs are the ones that people usually look for and want to flash. This is because they are usually tweaked to run better and fix errors that come form the OEM(original equipment manufacturer). There is also Cyanogenmod which is like stock Android but with tweaks.
I hope this helps.
Are there any mods like reboot in the shut down toggles? or battery icons with %
