Question BBC iPlayer App – ¿Y U No Run?

» How To Run BBC iPlayer onna AdamBBC iPlayer App – ¿Y U No Run? post #9

    ORIGINAL WHINY POST
Being a fanboy of the BBC and a UK resident, I’ve added the ‘BBC iPlayer’ app to my CM9-Beta4ish ROMed Adam, since Google Play Store says it is compatible.

But on trying to run it, I get redirected to a webpage which says:

    “Your phone is not supported.
Sorry, your phone does not support BBC iPlayer. More phones will be supported in the future.
To see a list of supported devices go to BBC iPlayer - Help -Where to get BBC iPlayer on a PC.”
» BBC iPlayer - Help - Not Supported
Going to the recommended page shows:

    “Where to get BBC iPlayer

You can watch and listen to the last 7 days of BBC TV and Radio programmes on BBC iPlayer in lots of different ways on lots of different devices. […]

    Tablet Devices link”
» BBC iPlayer - Help -Where to get BBC iPlayer
Following the Tablet Devices link reveals:

    “Where to get BBC iPlayer

    Tablet Devices
    Available on
    * Apple iPad
    * Android 2.2 (Flash 10.1, with ARMv7 processor required)

    Description
Play TV and Radio programmes on your tablet devices within the UK.
You will need a compatible device running the most up-to-date firmware/operating system installed.

    How to access
BBC iPlayer is supported on the Apple iPad and on Flash 10.1-enabled Android tablets running Android 2.2 or later, with the ARMv7 processor.
You can access BBC iPlayer by downloading the app from the Apple App Store or Android Market. Alternatively, you can access the BBC iPlayer website by typing BBC iPlayer - iPlayer Radio Home into your tablet’s web browser.”
» BBC iPlayer - Help - Where to get BBC iPlayer - Tablet Devices
That “Alternatively, […]” is my workaround for now, and thankfully the iPlayer website works for both video-on-demand and radio-on-demand, courtesy of Adobe Flash Player v11.1.115.8 and Opera Mobile v12.0.3.

A pertinent Q&A confirms device iPlayer Android app’s minimum HW/SW requirements:

“What device do I need to get the BBC iPlayer Android app?

The BBC iPlayer Android app is supported for devices with Android 2.2 (or higher) with minimum ARMv7 processor, and with Adobe Flash (latest version) installed.
» BBC iPlayer - Help - What device do I need to get the BBC iPlayer Android app?
So should the Adam run the BBC iPlayer app?

    Code:
    Category —— Min.Req.4.iPlayer.app — Adam.Haz.
    Processor — ARMv7 ————————————————— Dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore
    Flash ————— v10.1 ————————————————— v11.1.115.8
    Android ——— v2.2 —————————————————— v4.0.4
Hmmm… seems to me like the BBC iPlayer android app should run on an Adam – so does anybody know why it doesn’t?

I am curious what is your dpi setting? Try setting it to 140 dpi and see if the bbc app works.

    Cromnia Rom was my favorite.
    Loved using VEGAn-GE-Adam.
Currently running Jelly Bean - Beta 1

if the dpi is giving so much trouble with applications, maybe someone could make a fake dpi reporter?
so whenever a program asks for a dpi value we send back 140, but we use 120 on the adam.

Which DPI Changer App works well on the Adam?

Hey kwilson73 and blutze, many thanks for the heads up on DPI density being a factor in getting the BBC iPlayer app to run on an Adam – I didn't know it could be changed.

After some research, I installed a pair of pertinent apps:
    • ScreenInfo » https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...out.screeninfo
    • LCDDensity for Root » https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...n3o.lcddensity

But the latter doesn't seem to work on the Adam, and another candidate...
    • DPI Changer » https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...oid.dpichanger
...contains what is (for me at least) a dire warning...
“The file /system/build.prop is backed up and modified to change the ro.sf.lcd_density value to the value you specify. If you dont understand what this is, don't download it.”
...and a cautionary tale from Waudy on March 20, 2012 (Version 1.0.1):
“Stuck on boot — Didn't work on samsung galaxy s2, Omega 5.1 ICS ROM Sticks on boot screen.”
Rather than take such unnecessary risks, I thought I'd ask my TR buddies:
    • Which DPI changer app works well on the Adam?

OK, thanks blutze – and since BirdAPI Inc., the makers of the 'LCD Density Modder' app, say…
"Warning! Changing DPI values may cause some apps to crash or display incorrectly. Also, if you set a dpi that is incompatible with the device or OS, then it may fail to boot, and you will have to restore your OS and or build.prop file. I recommend doing a full backup of your system before using this program if you are new to changing your dpi. If your phone fails to boot, you can restore the build.prop file using adb from recovery mode. I am not responsible for any damage done to your device. Use at your own risk!"
…I'm taking their warning seriously, and doing..
    • a full TitaniumBackup backup everything run + sync-to-DropBox, plus
    • a Clockworkmod Recovery Nandroid backup
...before trying to run this app (which is something I shouldda dun by now anyhoo ).

Have users of the 'LCD Density Modder' app found it to be well-behaved on the Adam? Or has resorting to restoring from backups been required?

Cool Yes Indeedy, We CAN Haz BBC iPlayer!

Jeebus H Freakin Crust* in a hand basket – BBC iPlayer not only Works Fine in 140 DPI screen resolution, but also IT TURNS MY ADAM INTO A TELLYBOX!!!!1!!

How To Run BBC iPlayer onna Adam
    I dun a...

    1. 'LCD Density Modder' app by BirdAPI Inc. (thanks to a pointer by blutze) – download-&-install; run
    2. Switch the Adam’s screen resolution:
      • from the default 120 dpi (aka zoomed out to full extent)
      • to 140 dpi (aka zoomed in to the top left corner a bit; thanks to resolution pointers from kwilson73 and blutze)

    3. ‘BBC iPlayer’ app from Media Applications Technologies for the BBC – download-&-install; run

… and Worra Lorra Lorra stuff it’s got:
    • BBC TV – both live and on-demand
    • BBC Radio – both live and on-demand
    • Categories hierarchy – for helping find content to match your viewing/listening pleasure
    • Favourites – for squirreling away your guilty pleasures

Here are the Play Store links you need to get this wonderful enhancement up and running on your Adam:

'LCD Density Modder' app requires root access, and here are links to help you make it so, if necessary:

    Proletarian Internationalism
IIRC, the BBC are trying their hardest to act like despicable Little Englander nationalists and limit iPlayer accessibility to UK residents. See, for instance:
    • BBC iPlayer > Overseas availability
» BBC iPlayer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

However, as mentioned there, “many people outside the UK circumvent that rule by buying a virtual private network account with an IP address located in the UK”, and in this very thread, blutze says of it, “With Proxy no Problem in Germany”.

So – Share and Enjoy, my comrade Adamistas!

I’ll be off and explore Flipboard too, thanks to the tip from blutze.
