[ROM] RanBuntu 0.1 - Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) on Adam

Okay, so here's my initial cuts at a full Ubuntu on the Adam. To install it, you have to be running ubuntu on your PC, either from live usb/cd or installed.

    BIG DISCLAIMER!
It works for me, your mileage may vary, etc etc. don't just copy and paste the commands, understand what they do first or you may well hose your adam AND your system.

    What works :-
    • Ubuntu boots, GDM comes up and you can log in (assuming you have a USB keyboard)
    • Touchscreen - Base functionality
    • Wifi - Staging driver from KernelHacker, works well

    What doesn't :-
    • Acceleration
    • Sound
    • Unity 3D

    Choices :-
    • Install to Rescue or Normal Boot Partition - Rescue provides Dual-boot setup, if all goes wrong, just nvflash it back.
    • Install to SD or external USB

    Pre-install setup :-
Extract the tools into a directory, place the boot and system image files in the same directory, open a terminal and cd into it. e.g. ~/ranbuntu-0.1

How to install (automagic script!) :-
    Code:
    bash install.sh
This talks you through the install process and does the hard bits for you. It also creates a backup of the partition that you're about to overwrite (e.g. recovery part) to recovery-backup.img or normal-backup.img

    How to install (manual) :-
Boot tablet into forced recovery mode (Power on and Volume down) and give it the bootloader
    Code:
    sudo ./nvflash --bl bootloader.bin --sync
Backup your install partition (8=recovery - recommended OS,9=android)
    Code:
    sudo ./nvflash --resume --read 8 recovery.img --sync
Flash ubuntu-boot-usb.img or ubuntu-boot-sd.img to install partition
    Code:
    sudo ./nvflash --resume --download 8 boot.img --sync
Format destination usb stick/sd card to ext3 - for this, I recommend using gparted, deleting any partition on the stick and creating a single big ext3 partition.
Mount the stick/sd card on the PC - If you remove and re-insert the stick/card reader, nautilus will usually simply do this. To find the mount point, go to the device in nautilus and press Ctrl+L
As root untar the system tarball to the device's mountpoint. e.g. /media/e3aa3b02-1b78-4f3f-90b4-fcd1d9a856b9)
    Code:
    sudo tar --same-owner -xjvpf -C /media/e3aa3b02-1b78-4f3f-90b4-fcd1d9a856b9
    How I did it :-
Using linux4tegra alpha 1 tools and a bootloader.bin RaYmAn provided on one of the previous (now dead) forums
Took a copy of kernelhacker's adam kernel
built the kernel with android ndk 4 -crystax
Took linux4tegra alpha 1 example image
Grabbed the nvram.txt and put it in the right place
put the modules and firmware from the kernel in the right place
    Installed ubuntu-desktop

    ToDo list :-
    • Acceleration
    • Unity3D
    • Sound
    • 11.10 update
    • A good Linux onscreen keyboard (does one even exist)
    • Gestures - gesture app I used didn't recognise touch

    Credits
    • RaYmAn - lots of help along the way, the bootloader.bin and inspiration
    • KernelHacker - This is running his kernel which means we should get to have acceleration soon.

Great to read this thread! Means there devs interested in Ubuntu @ Adam

    1. Please correct the link for the Filesystem image, it points to utils.zip ..
    2. I was recommended Florence as a good on-screen keyboard. It is a standard Ubuntu package, can be installed with apt-get
    3. On AC-100 IRC logs KernelHacker mentioned he has been working on [and has managed??] GPU acceleration. I know they recommend taking GL part from Ubuntu AC-100 binaries. This ppa for GLES / OpenMAX etc.
    4. Debian on Adam. A post can have some useful things.
    5. For the sound I guess we need to take alc5623 driver from this rep
    6. I'm ready to contribute to this project, please PM me for a skype contact (== faster communication line)

Very excited about this post. Running Ubuntu on my desktop pc and love the idea of a native, fully functional port running on my Adam. Keep up the great work!

For a simpler more "tablet" keyboard than Florence, what about the one from plasma active?
    plasma_active_kbd.jpg

I don't have any information on it though.
